Bit Shifter

Horror Business (Demo)

In advance of the Halloween edition of Pulsewave, I tried to hurriedly do some recordings of the 10 Misfits songs I was planning to include in my live set. I booked some time in a rehearsal studio two nights ahead of the event in order to both rehearse & record vocals, but the entire session was too rushed. "Horror Business" was the only one to even approach listenability (well, you be the judge I guess, suffice it to say that the 9 others were much worse), so I did a very rough mix of it and thought I'd throw it online on 8bitcollective.

Recorded in Apple's GarageBand (for lack of anything else). Slight distortion used on the Game Boy, judicious compression used on both Game Boy and vocals.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for treating 8bitcollective's music area as a garbage bin for my failed experiments.

Recorded 2008 10 23 @ Funkadelic Studio, Room 11
01x DMG-01 running LSDJ v3.7.2

Asterion : Sweet! I was just listening to The Misfits today and thinking of doing something like this. It would've turned out totally lame. This, on the other hand, kicks ass.

Wakko : very noisy :)
at December 5th 2008, 07:44 AM

Slim Pickens : zOMG. This is really awesome stuff. Disassembler (Will) was playing it for me and I adore it as both a new Bit Shifter fan *and* an long-time Fiend. Despite what you think about the track, I think it's great just the way it is. Like another poster had mentioned, it's got that dirty sound that is a facet of the old Misfits recordings. I'd love to hear your interpretations on more of the old Danzig era stuff. MOAR DAMNIT!
at December 4th 2008, 11:49 AM

poke-1,170 : quite the lame excuses you prick, this tune rocks :D. As if the misfits had better recording conditions ;) Seriously, you got a very good voice and it adds something unique to the tunes. Consider doing a vocal album one day, I mean it !

irockout : Harsh!!! Very nice cover, Nice and trashy :D
at November 23rd 2008, 02:20 PM

Feast : Brilliant tune. Don't forget you can solo with yourself though, admittedly you need somebody to cover for backing vocals if it's for a live set... but throwing some harmony vocals behind the chorus there would give it more beans.
at November 23rd 2008, 11:45 AM

Ophycore : YES!
at November 23rd 2008, 10:34 AM

likeluke : this track is STILL fucking amazing. and i just remembered, i need to get one of those pixel skull shirts you had, as well. basically just the best set ever.

DYNABLADE : love the misfits, this is awesome :)
at November 21st 2008, 01:11 AM

josefnpat : I had to listen to this twice. First was with my shit iPod earphones, and I wasn't feeling the dynamics of it all. So i threw my MDR's on, and a lot of the clarity helps hear the actual song rather than the noise of the shodphones. My only concern is the dynamics like i said. It's good, but not up to competition to your other songs. I highly suggest more rounded bass in there.
at November 20th 2008, 09:13 PM

Furik : Oh god. This is great! Very dirty and industrial-esque.
at November 19th 2008, 11:46 AM

at November 19th 2008, 07:53 AM

Oxygenfad : A+ Josh !
at November 19th 2008, 06:26 AM

Random : I like this cover! It has a great Bit Shifter ™ style to it, even though it stays faithfully close to the original. I think the vocal could have been mixed in slightly louder in the verses, and there are some loud pops in the vocal too, which ideally would have been removed (perhaps with shorter attack time on the vocal compression). Still, your performance is impressive and your voice is great!
at November 19th 2008, 01:04 AM

Rainbowdragoneyes : Gotta love the garageband ---------()- on the "tuning" slider... very sacksy vocals, and you're not the first or the last to use 8bc as a garbage bin????????????????????????
at November 18th 2008, 11:54 PM

Oven Rake : I just can't stop listening to this...>_o

at November 18th 2008, 10:56 PM

SeanBad : nice job bit shifter, its really great. like u mixed the vocals with the gameboy very well, better than most gameboy/vocal songs. its very well done, and did you do the vocals? its great man.
at November 18th 2008, 09:01 PM

Note! : Very cool. Makes me want to do some Op Ivy or Pennywise covers or something in that vein.
at November 18th 2008, 08:23 PM

at November 18th 2008, 04:31 PM

Faking Amnesia : This is not garbage. This was an awesome rendition of a classic.
at November 18th 2008, 02:30 PM

Bit Shifter : Thanks guys! AlexLuthor: it was a pretty quick / dirty / no frills recording. Plus I guess I'm not necessarily out to clone every element of the original. But I hear you. I need some musclebound band members for backup vox!
at November 18th 2008, 02:05 PM

Anamanaguchi : Holy shit, 8bitcollective is good again?
at November 18th 2008, 02:00 PM

L-tron : Great track Bit-shifter...I love the instruments
at November 18th 2008, 01:51 PM

AlexLuthor : Well the vocals are great, but it sounds too empty and samey. I mean where's the second vocal or "guitar" for the bridge & chorus? sorry for being harsh, it's just that this is one of my fave misfits songs.
at November 18th 2008, 01:42 PM

Prizmatic Spray : The most important thing in any Misfits cover is a respectable vocal approach. The Misfits are one of my favorite bands ever, and I think you nailed it.
at November 18th 2008, 01:14 PM

Seed A.I. : Come on Josh. This was great.
at November 18th 2008, 12:53 PM

Jellica : ive never liked the misfits, but its nice to hear some new music from you! also respect on the GB mix down with the vocals.
at November 18th 2008, 11:27 AM

disassembler : I've listened to this again and again and again!! P.S. Garage Band isn't too bad for recording. Although, I like Live and I wouldn't go back to using Garage Band unless I had to. :p
at November 18th 2008, 11:19 AM

µB : Yeah! Awesome!
at November 18th 2008, 09:40 AM

Bit Shifter : c-c-c-c-combo breaker!
at November 18th 2008, 09:23 AM

Saori : i dont like it
at November 18th 2008, 09:16 AM

disassembler : This is rocking my pants off! But I'm not wearing pants anyway. (This has a completely different meaning for UK kids and it's awesome).
at November 18th 2008, 09:09 AM

Sievert : hahahah hell yes this is fucking awesome! I like how it switches between dark and happy. I actually really like the vocals, though a few words sound a bit loud, mainly the first word of each vocal line after the breaks. I also think its a bit noisy, though not by much. Very, very cool rendition, I absolutely love it.
at November 18th 2008, 08:44 AM

highbeam : hell yeah! this is great
at November 18th 2008, 07:04 AM

dotdUmmy : I wouldn't call this a failure at all. The programming is classic Bit Shifter (you've effectively put your spin on this), both the vocal performance and mix are excellent and the overall feel is a perfect blend of pop and grit, which is what the Danzig-era Misfits stuff is all about. Thanks for taking the plunge and sharing this with us! :)
at November 18th 2008, 06:53 AM

Kurisu Bearcub : you really don't give yourself enough credit dude. this track ended up great. it's going on the ipod as soon as i get home. i like how you gave your face a little more gravel to it for this track, it works well for you. i think we'd all love to hear the rest of this recording session.
at November 18th 2008, 06:51 AM

henryhomesweet : This is actually awesome!
at November 18th 2008, 05:37 AM

at November 18th 2008, 04:55 AM

at November 18th 2008, 02:04 AM

TristEndo : this is excelent man I love the adaptation into a more bouncey feel.
at November 18th 2008, 12:27 AM

Derris-Kharlan : you make it sound worse than it is; this is beyond "listenable". its actually quite enjoyable man.
at November 17th 2008, 10:20 PM

likeluke : fuck YES. i need this whole set somehow plz.
