Super Rare Orange "Play it Loud" DMG
Just kidding. My first try at the Acetone+RIT fabric dye method of coloring plastic. Turned out great, I think! I was very happy that the text on the front stayed completely intact. A nice shade of orange throughout. I think I'll try fuchsia next...

mdos : Yeah. I took mine out and put it back in once or twice before I got it as saturated as I wanted. The next time I do it I'll probably set a timer so I can get a better estimate of how long to take each time. I think that's the green I was looking at. I'd like to see if when you're satisfied with it :P.

Low-Gain : uh... i used "kelly green". it's kinda pea green.. but it's cool. needs to be a little more even though. ;) i was in a hurry
at September 24th 2008, 05:38 PM
mdos : Awesome, which green did you use? I thought about trying the olive one, I forgot what the actual name was. I was trying to get cool colors, namely colors that DMG's aren't already available in. I've got an idea for a really cool one I'll probably try soon. Post yours, I'd like to see it!

Low-Gain : haha. well success man.. just bought a $1 bottle of nail polish remover, and some rit. works like a charm. For those doing this. be sure to attempt this in a well ventilated area.. i think i'm high at the moment and have killed a few braincells.
My dmg is now green, and i have sunrise orange, and purple. i will try these colors out later. ;) Great Tip mdos!

mdos : @ disgustizoid: The problem is, I usually get attached and want to keep them :P. That and I feel bad for price gouging like that. If I can do a couple more, I might part with one or two, and just set a fair reserve, who knows :P
@ Jump! Press Start: Yeah, it sure beats sticky, uneven, and thick looking spray paint!

monkeydisco : i like this. much better than those bastardised DMGs out there
at September 24th 2008, 09:56 AM
disgustizoid : This is amazing.
Can't wait to see more colours from you.
And really, you should sell them on eBay. You could most likely get more than you paid for.

mdos : @egr: Well actually, that was just carefully removed with heat and a razor before the dye, and applied again afterwords.
at September 24th 2008, 06:11 AM
egr : That's really very nice! I notice the sticker on the battery cover is even still intact, wow!
at September 24th 2008, 06:10 AM
mdos : @ Whispy Woods: I was wondering the same thing when I started. It was just the normal grey. The color I ended up with looks only a small bit more dull than the box color, probably since it started from a neutral grey. It still came out pretty vivid though. Darker colors would certainly look best, but if I can get this orange, I'm sure some light greens, blues, pinks, etc. aren't out of the question. They just might have some of that neutral tone in them. I plan on trying more colors soon, especially if I can find anybody to send some more grey shells my way.

xero : ulta cool!
at September 24th 2008, 05:46 AM
Whispy Woods : how does it fare doing lighter colours? I assume this was a grey boy, does the dye go "on top" of the existing colour or does the acetone help it replace or whatever.
at September 24th 2008, 05:45 AM
mdos : @ Emar: All I mean to say is that WHILE soaking, depending on how much acetone is in your mix, it can soften the plastic and make it easy to accidentally scrape when handling. If you handle it with care, and rinse well with water (and maybe a little bit of soap) afterwords once the chemicals are washed off its back to normal. It really just looks and feels like one of the other colored DMG's now.
at September 24th 2008, 05:25 AM
Emar : what level of softenin are we talking about? and is it permanent?
at September 24th 2008, 05:22 AM
calmdownkidder : Dayum that's a nice paint job! Mad props on keeping the text as well!

Popsicle Theory : oh my. this is the most beautiful piece of gameboy ive seen in my entire life. very very well done!
at September 24th 2008, 02:22 AM
mdos : Thanks guys! Nothing too fancy about how it was done... 50/50 mix of nail-polish remover (try to find unscented) and water. Add generous amount of RIT fabric dye and mix it all up. Take your plastic (after removing all the electronics from it, of course) and just soak fully submersed, stirring and flipping occasionally. I did a couple soaks to make sure all the colors were even, and that it had taken as much dye as it could. Really went off without a hitch though, I was very pleasantly surprised. The diluted mix I think is what helped keep the text on there. Just make sure to handle them when in the mixture with a very soft touch from a non-sharp object since the plastic will be softened and more susceptible to scratching/deformations. That's about it!
